Artisan Sourdough Bread

Alternative title: How sourdough saved my summer. Ha! It’s no secret that I am not a huge fan of summer. In Alabama the air is so thick you can wear it. I get frequent headaches from the heat and humidity. So I do my best to stick to indoor activities in the dog days of summer.

In May I began a sourdough journey that began with making a starter, much like every other home baker during quarantine. And two months later I’ve tried a few recipes that I want to pass along in case you guys are interested in our new favorites.

For a traditional round sourdough loaf, I had a few blunders before I happened across this recipe from The Clever Carrot. It’s made from all purpose flour, which was fantastic since bread flour and most flours were no where to be found in stores for a while. It’s July 10 as I’m writing this, and just in the last week has been the first time I’ve seen bread flour in stores since early March! SO exciting. I may have hugged the bag of bread flour. Anyway….

I had my first successful bake with this recipe. She walks you through step by step giving thorough explanations along the way. Maybe one day I’ll write up my own tutorial, but that’s for another time when there aren’t toddlers underfoot. Right now I’ll just show you my loafs and send you her way.

The next recipe I tried was sourdough dinner rolls from Farmhouse on Boone. I love yeast rolls so this was an easy decision. These rolls are amazing! I let my dough ferment for about 15 hours before I baked and the sourdough flavor is really nice! I used her recipe from her ebook on sourdough recipes, but her blog post goes a little more in depth if you’re baking these for the first time. I’ve made them a few times now and we LOVE these rolls. Keeper recipe for sure.

After seeing sourdough cinnamon rolls from Hopewell Heights pop up several times across my instagram feed, I decided to give these a try with my leftover starter. I had already made dough for an artisan loaf and had just enough starter to try something else. Turns out I didn’t have quite enough for the recipe, so I modified it a bit using what I had.

What I ended up with was the best cinnamon rolls we’ve ever had. I will never make cinnamon rolls another way again! These were to die for. Because I changed up the recipe I am going to make my own post about the rolls, but this is the link to the original recipe here.

For my next recipe, I tried the sandwich bread from The Clever Carrot (she’s my top resource for sourdough now, and her book is amazing!)

Favorite Sourdough Recipes: Sourdough Sandwich Bread

This recipe is another keeper. I loved having a softer loaf of sandwich bread that still had the traditional sourdough flavor for everyday eating and snacking. I may try less baking time the next time I make this one just because we tend to like a lighter crust on our sandwich bread. But overall this bread is delicious and was easy to make.
